Ronald H. Van Maldegiam, age 88, Army Korean War Veteran, of Libertyville, IL, formerly of Skokie, IL, Trevor, WI, and Fort Myers, FL, passed away peacefully at home on Christmas morning, December 25, 2020. Beloved husband of Dorothy, nee Weber, for 67 years; loving father of Debra, Stephen (Mary), Karen (David Giza), and Timothy (Anne); dear grandfather of Amy (Brett) Meyer, Joseph (Lindsey), Jason, Albina, Katie (Joseph) Page, and Emily (Eric) Lindberg; cherished great-grandfather of Bella, Aubrey, Alex, Grayson, Lucas, Aidan, Liam, and Rory; fond brother of Norman (the late Jacqueline) Van Maldegiam and Justine (James) Klug.
Ron was a gentle giant with a quick smile, a good sense of humor and an easy-going disposition who loved football, cars, boating, camping, bowling, sailing and golf. He grew up in Chicago, graduated from St. George High School and Loyola University. He married Dorothy, the love of his life, while on Christmas leave from the Army. Together Ron and Dorothy built a home in Skokie and raised 4 children. Affectionately known as “Pops” by his children, their friends, as well as others, he was a father figure too. Ron was a volunteer leader in the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years and the Knights of Columbus for 20 years. Ron was an accountant / CFO and strong supporter of implementing new technology, especially computers. At home, Ron was the first on the block to install central air conditioning, buy a color TV and in the 1970’s the first in the area to install solar panels for home hot water. He will be missed dearly.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, June 25, 2021, 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, 8100 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. Urn interment following at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, Skokie.
