Very sorry to hear about his passing. Ron Campbell was my cross country coach for the 1st girls team at Niles West (Fall 1978). We all loved him and he made us laugh every day. I have lots of funny stories about how he inspired us to train harder and run faster. He was like a father to all of us on the team. Such a wonderful man. He will be deeply missed. My father Greggory Youstra also remembers Ron fondly as a wonderful teacher and friend. Our condolences to you and your family.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Ron Campbell, and I am thankful to have known such a great man. For many years he served as the Referee for the Chicago Public Schools Track and Field Championship meets with fairness, patience, and wisdom in excellence. He was a wonderful support to me as the Coordinator, and he played a role in the growth and success of the Program. He is missed and will continue to be missed and we honor the legacy of kindness and quiet impact he made on our students, coaches, and meet administrators. I pray for the peace and comfort of the Lord towards his family in this time of bereavement.

Ron was one of the guys who immediately befriended me when I came to work on the Triple Jump crew at the Boys State Track and Field Meet back in 1989. I always looked forward to seeing him each May and catching up on each other's families. He used a wonderfully booming voice when announcing the distance jumped by a competitor: "FORTY-SIX FEET, THREE AND A HALF INCHES!!" His absence at the Meet and from those who knew him on the crew will be truly missed.

I starting my CC/track coaching career at Luther North in the early 1980's and I always remember Ron being so open and encouraging to me as a young coach. We would come to meets at Niles W and he would always come up and say "hi" and ask about our athletes, etc. He was a wonderful spokesman for our sport. Even after he stopped coaching, when I would see him he would come up and starting a conversation. As a coach, those are memories that are important to me.

When my late wife, Jerri Rae, and I were raising our girls and knew Ron and Donna, we tried to raise them as they did their girls. What role models they were.

What I do today and for the past 43 years is coach track and cross country. And it is because of Coach Campbell. I had a truly wonderful and positive experience being a member of the Niles West High School cross country and track teams with Coach Campbell. We have lost a great roll model. May he rest in peace.
