Martin B. “Marty” McCarthy, Jr.

Martin B. “Marty” McCarthy Jr., age 94, was born to eternal life on Monday, January 17, 2022. He died peacefully at home in Glenview, IL, with his wife Jeanne, son Tom and daughter-in-law Patty by his side.

Marty McCarthy was born in Chicago on June 22, 1927, the eldest of four children of Martin B. McCarthy and Mildred (Hamstengel) McCarthy. Marty met his wife in grade school and she vividly remembers in 8th grade him moving the furniture and rolling up the carpets in her apartment so everyone could dance. Marty went on to attend Loyola Academy where he was a standout basketball player. Immediately upon graduation in 1945 Marty enlisted in the Navy. He served in San Francisco until the end of the war, joking he was an NLP – Never Left Port. Upon discharge Marty took advantage of the GI Bill and attended Loyola University, graduating in three and a half years.

Marty was united in marriage to Jeanne Lucille Corcoran on February 22, 1951, in Chicago. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage and raised their five sons in Glenview, IL.

Marty had a long and very distinguished career in insurance, first with CNA Insurance and finishing as a Vice President of Mutual of New York. Marty traveled widely during his career, hosting hospitality rooms at professional association conventions, often with Jeanne by his side. In February of 2004, Marty and Jeanne traveled to Puerto Rico for the PIMA Convention where Marty was presented with the insurance industry “Legend Award” for his “significant contributions to both the insurance marketing industry and the Professional Insurance Marketing Association.”

During his retirement Marty enjoyed golfing with his wife, fishing with his grandkids and entertaining family and friends at his getaway in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

In addition to his wife, Marty is survived by his sons: Michael (Phoebe), Thomas (Patty), Daniel (Gretchen), Patrick (Sue) and Robert (Hayley), and daughter-in-law Margo. He is further survived by eleven grandchildren- Kevin (Irene), Katie (Bret) Sharp, Michael, Colm, John, Matt (Haley), Liam, Brenden, Caitlin, Elizabeth and Thomas and two great grandchildren Aidan McCarthy and Riley Sharp. He is also survived by brother–in-law Thomas (Colette) Corcoran and many nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by brother James McCarthy, sister-in-law Marge McCarthy, sister Audrey Maloney and her husband James, and brother Robert McCarthy.

Visitation, Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 10:15 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial, 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 1775 Grove St., Glenview. Urn Interment, All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Des Plaines.
