Master gardener. Outstanding baker. Frequent traveler. Francophile. Survived by her many friends, brother Arthur (Diann), nephew A.J., and cats Ziva and Tigger, Margaret Mary “Peggy” Thoma died May 14, 2018. She was 66. Peggy’s love for flowers, coffee, Paris and people shone throughout her life. Earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Loyola University Chicago, where she later worked as Communication Program Manager, Peggy studied in Paris during her junior year and began her lifelong love of that city.
She also traveled the U.S. and visited Thailand, Bali, Nepal and Guatemala. It was there, as a proponent of social justice, she worked on volunteer projects. Peggy worked at The Children’s Place Association in Chicago and volunteered at the Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture, Heartland Alliance, Pax Christi Illinois, and Witness for Peace, where she engaged in extensive public speaking and worked with the press.
A docent at Lurie Gardens in Millennium Park and a volunteer at the Garfield Park Conservatory Demonstration Garden, Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse, and the Wicker Park Garden Club, Peggy enjoyed nurturing her own lush garden at her Chicago home.
A native of Chicago, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ruth, nee McDonald, Thoma.
No Visitation. Family and friends will meet for Funeral Mass, Thursday, May 24, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter Catholic Church, 8100 Niles Center Rd., Skokie. Urn Interment, St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, Skokie.
