It is with great sadness that the family of Lowell Alverson Dunlap, Ph.D., announces his passing on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Presence St. Francis Hospital, in Evanston, IL, after a brief illness. He was 74.
Dr. Dunlap was born on December 13, 1943, in Toledo, OH, to Alice, nee Cunningham, and Lowell Alverson Dunlap. He grew up on Hebron Avenue, in Shortsville, NY, a small town outside of Rochester. His father served in World Wars I and II as a supply officer. He was an only child, and his childhood nickname “Skip” followed him throughout life. He attended McQuaid Jesuit High School and St. John Fisher College, in Rochester, NY, going on to earn a Doctorate in Philosophy from Marquette University, in Milwaukee, WI.
After completing his Ph.D., he worked with the Catholic League in Wisconsin and as a lobbyist within Wisconsin state politics. He then came to Chicago and began a career within the administration at Loyola University Medical Center, which spanned 25 years, and also included teaching service as an adjunct professor at Loyola University. He also taught economics at DePaul University as an adjunct professor and philosophy at several local colleges, including Benedictine College, and served on the school board at St. Margaret Mary School, in Chicago. Following his retirement, he continued to work part time in sales and as a school bus driver.
Dr. Dunlap had a lifelong passion for baseball. As a child, during trips to visit his mother’s family in New York, he often spent time at Ebbets Field watching his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers. He played baseball through high school, primarily as a speedy center fielder. His baseball playing days ended at the age of 19, when he was offered a contract with a minor league affiliate of the New York Mets, but decided to pursue his college degree. He remained an avid Dodger fan throughout his life. He also coached little league baseball as part of the Warren Park Youth Baseball Little League for over a decade, where he enjoyed seeing his children and grandchildren get their own starts as baseball players.
He is survived by his wife, Gail, nee Lasch; his three children, Beth (George Weyer), Ian, and Keith Dunlap (Grecia Montero); and three grandchildren, Gabriel, Elijah, and Theodore Weyer.
His family will remember him for his often biting and always-humorous commentaries, his wide-ranging curiosity and intellect, his love of grilled food, and his pride and love for his children and grandchildren. He will be missed dearly.
Services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Warren Park Youth Baseball Little League, 2212 W. Lunt Ave., Chicago, IL, 60645 (http://sports.bluesombrero.com/Default.aspx?tabid=933555).
