Hella Hauer, nee Riemann, age 82, of Morton Grove, died April 29, 2023, at Evanston Hospital, Evanston, Illinois. She is survived by her husband Rich; and son, Tony, and his wife, Colin. She grew up in the aftermath of World War II in Kiel, Germany, one of five siblings. Hella immigrated to the US at age19, speaking only German. She learned English by watching television and navigating everyday life, and sounded exactly like a native Chicagoan for the remainder of her life.
Hella moved to the US to marry Michael Carollo. The marriage ended in 1982. Her great joy was adopting her son, Tony Carollo, in 1970. Hella worked at the White Cap bottling company, turning an eight-week assignment on the bottling line to 8 years culminating in a position in quality control. She then worked at Montgomery Ward for a brief time before settling in at Pedian Rug Company, where she stayed for some years and felt like a part of the family.
While at Montgomery Ward, Hella met Richard Hauer, the love of her life. They married in 1993 and were a loving team until her death. They would have celebrated 30 years together in December of this year. Hella and Rich filled their lives with many beloved pets, including several dogs and two special cats, Shemeika, and Annie.
Hella was kind, courageous, funny, and in her own words, “a real toughie”. She survived cancer five times, encountering those episodes and other health challenges with pragmatism and resilience. She had a genuine curiosity about other people, and knew details about the lives of most of the people she met. Hella loved to be known in turn, and relished feeling like a regular at her favorite stores, restaurants, and doctors’ offices. She would often stop by her primary doctor’s office with fresh produce that Rich grew, just to say hello. Hella was utterly unique and very loved.
