Helen Marie Gazzolo, née Tomes, age 91, of Skokie, IL, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 28, 2023.
Daughter of the late William and Helen, née Runser, Tomes, she was born August 6, 1931, in Philadelphia, PA.
Cherished sister of William Wylie Tomes, Jr.; devoted wife of the late Frank H.; beloved mother of Anne Marie & Catherine Gazzolo and Clare (Michael) Rohan; doting grandmother of eight Rohan grandchildren: Joseph (Kaitlyn), Margaret (Joseph) Strada, Peter (Deirdre), Bernadette, John Paul, Dominic, Joan, and Elizabeth; caring great-grandmother of Sebastian and Beckett Strada, Declan and Cailey Rohan, Finnigan and Brendan Rohan.
Graduate of Marywood Girls High School and Northwestern University, both of Evanston, Helen worked at Rotary International, in Evanston, for 10 years before marrying Frank.
She fully immersed herself in being a stay-at-home wife and mother.
A very devout Catholic, she contributed generously to Christ the Redeemer Byzantine Catholic Church, Chicago; Annunciation of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church, Homer Glen; and St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Skokie.
Big-hearted with her talents and time, Helen assisted the Missionaries of Charity Sisters’ soup kitchen and gave selflessly to the underprivileged and various religious and political groups.
Helen will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Visitation, Wednesday, May 3, 2023, from 3 p.m. until time of Parastas (Great Panachida), 7 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie.
Family and friends will meet for Rite of Christian Burial and Divine Liturgy, Thursday, May 4, at 10 a.m., at Annunciation of the Mother of God Byzantine Catholic Church, 14610 S. Will Cook Rd., Homer Glen.
Interment, All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Des Plaines.
