We are so sorry to hear about Genes passing. He was such a great guy! We’ve know him over 45 years and used to love talking to him! He was the best roofer anywhere and s fabulous guy! He will be sorely missed! Our deepest sympathies.

Karen and Bassing Family, We are heartbroken to hear of Gene's passing. What a superhuman being he was! And how blessed we were to have you as our next door neighbors. We look back on those years with such happiness, remembering how good you and Gene were to us. You showed us what it meant to be truly selfless parents and you gave us the roadmap to follow as we started out to build our own family. We can both still hear Gene's good-natured, hearty laugh when he would discover us doing something ridiculous around the house. He always took the time to teach us the right way to do everything. And he always did it with a good dose of humor and love. Although the world has surely lost a great deal of sparkle with Gene's passing, he leaves behind your beautiful family who will fill the darkness with the pieces of Light he's placed in each of you. With so much love, Candy and Rick Pullano

Dear Karen and family, Sending thoughts and prayers for Gene and for all of you now and in the days ahead... I have such fond memories of Gene as a preschool Dad...nothing like “donuts with Dad”...
Staff of Trinity United Methodist Church of Wilmette left a message on April 28, 2020:
The staff of Trinity are shocked and saddened by your loss. Gene and Bassing Roofing have been close partners with our church for two generations and we both treasured Gene's advice and enjoyed his always upbeat love for life. He was a friend - not a contractor - and we will miss him greatly. Your family is in our prayers.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Grandpa, I am so blessed to be one of your grandchildren. You have taught me so many lessons that I will carry with me throughout life. My dad admired you more than you’ll ever know and will make sure your Karen is in great hands along with your six other children. Your humor was enlightening and the way you loved grandma is a love I wish to have one day. You will be so missed everyday but I’m happy you’re no longer in pain. I know you will be watching over us everyday. Love you Grandpa, Allison.

Dear “My Favorite Father In law-“ We are missing you so much. But know you are at peace. Thank you for always taking such care of the family. You’re an inspiration to us all. We admire your work ethic. You never met a challenge you couldn’t tackle. Remember putting the lights in my china cabinet so all our pretty dishes could be seen? For the past 25 years, every time I turn the China cabinet on, it brings a smile to my face, because you and Jim added them for me. We love the passion you had for your hobbies. Teaching the kids to fish and Ally to ski. They share these passions and you helped instill them. We love you. Watch over us. We need it living in these crazy times. I am proud to have been your favorite daughter in law. I wear this title with pride. I love you and miss you. Rest In Peace. KB

Words cannot express how very sorry I am for your loss, Bassing Family. Your Dad was one of a kind, with a dry wit and amazing sense of humor that I just adored. When I close my eyes and think of your Dad, the same picture pops in my mind: Being at the lake house and seeing your Dad with a fishing pole in hand, walking down to the dock, with that big smile on his face. Thinking of all, sending thoughts and prayers your way.Rest in peace, Mr. Bassing - I hope you are on a big beautiful lake with the biggest fish anyone's ever seen on your line, right now. With deepest condolences, Amy

Grandpa, There is never an easy way to say goodbye to someone so loved by so many. What an amazing man you were. Incredibly strong, always so handsome and dressed to the nines, with the best smile and an even better laugh following one of your jokes or catchphrases. The legacy you left behind will be carried down for generations to come. Thank you for being a big part in making my mom the woman she is today. She takes after you; tough, stubborn, and a real fighter. Don’t worry, I’m watching out for her in the same way I know you are for her, Grandma, the six other Bassing children, the fifteen grandkids, and more from up above . None of us will be the same without you here, but we will carry you in our hearts for the rest of our lives. Thank you for all of the lessons you taught me, the laughs we shared, and the memories we made. We are all so lucky to have had a one of a kind man like you in all of our lives. I hope you are at peace fishing somewhere catching the big one! I love you and I can’t wait until we meet again. Until then, I’ll look for little signs of you every day of my life. Thank you for being my Grandpa. I love you and miss you already. Love your 4th grandchild, Madison Kathleen Horvath
