Elmer Gene Greable, age 80, of Winnetka, IL, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2021, with his daughter, Jennifer, by his side.
Gene was born July 2, 1941, in Cape Girardeau, MO, to Elmer Francis and Artie Jane Greable.
Gene was a 1959 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School. He went on to receive his Undergraduate Degree from Southeast Missouri State, and a Master’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Upon completion of his higher education, Gene went onto a 30+ year career as a CPA and Partner with Arthur Andersen Accounting in St. Louis, MO, and Chicago, IL. In addition to his family, and his proud career with Arthur Andersen, Gene dedicated much of his life to public service in the community of Winnetka, where he and his wife, Marilynn, resided for close to 50 years. Gene served as Village President for two terms, from 2013 through 2017. Prior to his role as Village President, Gene served in numerous roles for the Village of Winnetka as Trustee, Chamber of Commerce, Plan Commission, Zoning Board, Caucus, and Parks District. In addition to his work with the Village of Winnetka, Gene served in many other community roles, including School Board President in the late 1980’s. Gene absolutely loved everything about and serving for the Village of Winnetka and the surrounding community. He was arguably one of the most dedicated Winnetkans!
Once established into his professional career, Gene served as a member of the Southeast Missouri State University Foundation and provided an accounting scholarship to numerous students over the years.
In addition to his community and corporate services, Gene was an avid golfer and loved to spend time with his family, especially family vacations to Disney World.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Greable Mackey; her husband, Scott Mackey; and their three children, Jaxson Scott (14), Brooke Taylor (11) , and Maxwell Greable (8), of Winnetka.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Artie Jane Greable; his loving wife of 50 years, Marilynn Taylor Greable; and their son, Mark Gene Greable.
Memorial Service, Friday, August 27, 2021, at 10 a.m., at Winnetka Congregational Church, 725 Pine St., Winnetka, IL, 60093.
