Edna Lillian Holmes, age 94, of Edmonds, WA, formerly of Skokie, IL, died on June 6, 2020, in Edmonds, after a long and fully lived life.
Edna was born in Chicago, IL, to Ernest and Julia, nee Konkel, Seybert. She and her sister, Elsie, attended The Luther Institute in Chicago, before the family moved to Skokie in 1943, where she would remain for the next 70 years. She married her husband, John Stuart Holmes, in 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Skokie, where she also volunteered as a secretary for the school for many years. John and Edna raised two children, Anita and Glenn. She was a loving grandmother to her seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Edna always wanted to be doing and going. She was an avid and excellent bowler. She started golf in her 50’s and traveled on many golf trips. She loved to travel, go to the theater and movies, play cards, and was always the lucky one at bingo and the casino. After her children were grown, she went to work as an administrative assistant at Century Communications, a job which she enjoyed and where she made many close friends. She retired in 1980. Throughout her life, she supported St. Paul Lutheran Church, the VFW, and other veterans’ interests.
In 2013, she sold her home of 50 years and moved to the Seattle, WA, area to be near her daughter, granddaughter, and family. At her new community, she immediately made lots of friends and got involved in all of the activities. She joined a card group, continued to go to casinos, and, of course, excelled at bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her beloved son, Glenn; her sister, Elsie Van Cleave; and her nephew, Scott Van Cleave.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Anita Smith (Tim); her grandchildren, Tanya Johnson (Carl), Brent (Jenn), Neil (Wendy), Heidi Simmons (Robert), Alden, Tyler, and Blaine; her eight great-grandchildren; and her niece, Karen Van Cleave (Scott).
