Dorothy A. Van Maldegiam, nee Weber, age 88, of Libertyville, IL, formerly of Skokie, IL, Trevor, WI, and Fort Myers, FL, passed away September 19, 2021, at Condell Medical Center, Libertyville. Beloved wife of the late Ronald H. for 67 years; loving mother of Debra, Stephen (Mary), Karen (David Giza), and Timothy (Anne); dear grandmother of Amy (Brett) Meyer, Joseph (Lindsey), Jason Giza, Albina Giza, Katie (Joseph) Page and Emily (Eric) Lindberg; cherished great- grandmother of Bella, Aubrey, Alex, Grayson, Lucas, Aidan, Liam, Rory & Everett; and fond sister of the late Frank J. Weber.
Dorothy was fun-loving, outgoing and always “busy and on the go” juggling family and work. She was a kind-hearted woman driven by a strong Catholic faith, strong will and a good sense of humor. She was known for her quick wit, famous sayings (“Dorothy isms”), saying it “ like it is” which always made you smile, laugh and/or shake your head in disbelief. She loved camping, travel, Sanibel Island, Camp Lake, baking Christmas cookies, hosting family reunions and enjoyed a good gin martini and cigarette while dining/socializing with family and friends.
Dorothy grew up in Morton Grove and Chicago and graduated from St. Scholastica High School. She married Ronald, the love of her life, while he was on Christmas leave from the Army. Together Ron and Dorothy built a home in Skokie and raised 4 children. For 20+ years Dorothy cared for 2 aunts that had helped raise her after her mother’s passing when Dorothy was only 12. Dorothy was a volunteer leader in the Boy Scouts of America for 15 years. She worked in and retired from the insurance industry serving in a variety of administrative roles. She made many life-long friends along her life’s path. Dorothy was affectionately known as “Mom” by her children, their friends and many others she was a mother figure to. She will be missed dearly.
