Benjamin M. Pulex

Benjamin M. Pulex, 18, died on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at his Skokie home with family at his side. Benjamin was born June 09, 2003, in Evanston, IL to devoted parents Magnolia Rivera-Pulex and Cesar Pulex. Benjamin grew up in a home filled with deep love and encouragement alongside his sister, Camila Pulex. Together the family prioritized values like love, respect, and gratitude. These values were often cultivated by regular family trips that fostered a sense of curiosity and stewardship for the environment and ocean life – while also turning Benjamin into a well-seasoned traveler. His annual trips to visit his family in Long Beach, California led to some of his greatest experiences and memories, especially alongside his cousin Angelo Pulex.

During the daytime Benjamin was also cared for lovingly by his grandmother, Angela Rivera. Shortly after Benjamin’s arrival into the world his cousin Julia Rivera was born almost a month after. Together they were raised by their grandmother who affectionately supported them in becoming two wonderful children. Benjamin and Julia learned how to play, talk, and walk together. Their adventures and special bond lasted together throughout their entire lives – journeying through elementary (Middleton), middle (McCracken), and high school (Niles North) together. Their bond grew even more special when Benjamin’s younger sister, Camila Pulex, arrived into the world to join their adventures. The trio of children developed a keen appreciation for playing together, laughing and rejoicing in each other’s company. When alone together, Benjamin and Camila built a uniquely special sibling relationship, with Benjamin always looking after his younger sister.

Benjamin Pulex graduated from Niles North High School (Class of 2021) with a group of amazing, long-time friends. Benjamin and his friends enjoyed soccer scrimmaging, playing video games, and eating out at local restaurants. Together (with support from Benjamin’s father) they also founded a local soccer team, the Skokie United Futbol Team HS21.

After the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis that Benjamin received he had shown compassion and hoped that no other children would have to endure what he did. The greatest protection he had during his battle with ALS was the never-ending support and care given to him by his parents. To provide safety and comfort to Benjamin throughout his illness his parents quickly learned the complex forms of ALS treatments for patients and performed them independently at home. Throughout every stage Benjamin’s illness Magnolia and Cesar were by his side providing the medical and emotional support he needed at any hour of the morning or night – while also striving hard to ensure that Benjamin found joy in moments and activities throughout the day. Together they quickly became movie and anime aficionados bonding over movie classics and anime shows between treatments.

Prior to his ALS diagnosis, Benjamin was an undergraduate student at NorthPark University interested in pursuing marine biology. He had received a private tour with the University of Washington’s faculty in 2021 and was personally encouraged by faculty to transfer into the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories program. In a world full of complexity, Benjamin was the opposite – he was caring, grateful, honest, and above all humble. He retained simple yet abundant pleasures in life: spending time with his loving family, his amazing group of friends, watching Spiderman movies and anime, listening to 80’s music classics, adhering to his fierce loyalty to Real Madrid by watching games and cheering any hour of the day, also extending that team loyalty to the Seattle Seahawks, and immersing himself into caring and learning more about ocean life (especially Great White Sharks and Killer Whales, his favorite animals). Although Benjamin had an initial quiet sense about him, once fully acquainted he had a sharp sense of humor and quick wit. Even making jokes and playing pranks throughout his battle against ALS, staying true to himself until the very end.

Benjamin is survived by his parents, Magnolia Rivera-Pulex and Cesar Pulex, his sister Camila Pulex, his pets Mimi, Nova, and Tiger; his grandparents Angela (Espino) Rivera and Vicente Rivera; his uncles Homero Rivera, Rudy Pulex (Rosa Ramirez-Pulex), Ulises Rivera (Carmen Rivera); his aunts Amarilis (Pulex) Mazariegos; his cousins Carmen Rivera, Angela Rivera, Julia Rivera, Ulises Rivera, Shelley (Jessy Correa) Pulex, Sharon (Armando Herrera) Herrera-Pulex, Angelo Pulex, Alexander Pulex, Anthony Pulex, Walfred Osoy, Adamaris Osoy; second-nephews and nieces Jessy Correa, Jayziah Correa, Jayzelle Correa, and Ariana Herrera. He was preceded in death by his cousin Ludwing Benjamin Osoy and his grandparents Elvia Mazariegos and Benjamin Pulex Sr.

Visitation, Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. with a Service at 2 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie.

Benjamin Manuel Pulex, de 18 años, murió el sábado 26 de febrero de 2022 en su casa de Skokie con su familia a su lado. Benjamin nació el 9 de junio de 2003 en Evanston, IL a padres muy dedicados Magnolia Rivera-Pulex y Cesar Pulex. Benjamin creció en un hogar lleno de profundo amor y aliento junto a su hermana, Camila Pulex. Juntos, la familia priorizó valores como el amor, el respeto y la gratitud. Estos valores a menudo se cultivaron mediante viajes familiares regulares que fomentaron un sentido de curiosidad y responsabilidad por el medio ambiente y la vida marina, al tiempo Benjamin se convirtió en un viajero experto. Para brindar seguridad y comodidad a Benjamin durante su enfermedad, sus padres aprendieron rápidamente las formas complejas de los tratamientos de ELA para los pacientes y los realizaron de forma independiente en el hogar. A lo largo de cada etapa de la enfermedad de Benjamín, Magnolia y César estuvieron a su lado brindándole el apoyo médico y emocional que necesitaba a cualquier hora de la mañana o de la noche, mientras se esforzaban al máximo para asegurarse de que Benjamín encontrará alegría en los momentos y actividades durante todo el día. Juntos, rápidamente se convirtieron en aficionados al cine y al anime y se vincularon con los clásicos del cine y los programas de anime entre los tratamientos.

Antes de su diagnóstico de ELA, Benjamin era un estudiante de pregrado en la Universidad de North Park interesado en dedicarse a la biología marina. Había recibido un recorrido privado con la facultad de la Universidad de Washington en 2021 y la facultad lo animó personalmente a transferirse al programa Friday Harbor Laboratories de la Universidad de Washington. En un mundo lleno de complejidad, Benjamin era todo lo contrario: cariñoso, agradecido, honesto y, sobre todo, humilde. Conservó placeres simples pero abundantes en la vida: pasar tiempo con su amada familia, su increíble grupo de amigos, ver películas de anime y Spiderman, escuchar clásicos de la música de los 80, adherirse a su feroz lealtad al Real Madrid viendo partidos y animando cualquier hora de el día, también extendiendo la lealtad del equipo a los Seattle Seahawks, y sumergiéndose en el cuidado y aprendiendo más sobre la vida en el océano (especialmente los grandes tiburones blancos y las Orcas, sus animales favoritos). Aunque Benjamin tenía un sentido inicial tranquilo sobre él, una vez que lo conocían completamente, tenía un sentido del humor y un ingenuidad  rápida. Incluso haciendo bromas y haciendo bromas a lo largo de su batalla contra la ELA, manteniéndose fiel a sí mismo hasta el final.

Le precedieron en la muerte su primo Ludwing Benjamin Osoy y sus abuelos Elvia Mazariegos y Benjamin Pulex Sr.
