Bart van Alphen, Ph.D., age 43, of Evanston, devoted husband of Leona Xin, loving brother of Lieke van Alphen, passed away on February 2, 2021.
Bart was born to a family of scientists in the lovely, small town of Breda, Netherlands, on October 13, 1977. As a child, Bart enjoyed reading. “On weekends, the four of us – my parents and my sister and I – would each hold a book and read for the whole day,” as he described one of his best childhood memories.
Bart dedicated his life to science. Before his Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University, in Evanston, he pursued his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Erasmus Medical Center, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and completed his first Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia. He was well-respected by his colleagues and offered his full support to young scientists.
A true international citizen, Bart was able to connect with friends from all around the world. Far away from their hometowns, Bart and Leona met in Chicago in 2013. They married two years later and have been best friends – and a tremendous support to each other – ever since.
Visitation, Saturday, February 13, 2021, from 11 a.m. until time of Remembrances, 1 p.m., at HABEN Funeral Home & Crematory, 8057 Niles Center Rd., Skokie.
